This is a tar paper roof over my garage [that extends out away from the rest of the house] and it’s starting to form little puddles when it rains. I guess this might mean that the puddles might break through or cause leaks, or that the wood in the garage roof might rot, but… it’s just the garage. Does it matter? Thanks

Is it raining in the garage yet? If not don’t worry about it. If you call any roofing people ALL of them are going to say you need a new roof.

Your roof should have an adequate slope so that water will drain off. If you have dips or low spots in the roof, the water will puddle. If your garage is not leaking now, it eventually will. If you have a low spot, you will need to support the roof and restore the drainage slope, not just apply new roofing material. It might not be an emergency, but you will most likely be looking at roof repairs in the near future. In the meantime, keep the roof clean of debris, and if you are able to access the roof, sweep the puddling water away so that it doesn’t stand in the low spot for very long.

It really devalues your house not to have a garage. Houses are hard to sell without a garage. It may fall in for all the reasons you just mentioned. It is a lot cheaper to replace the roof then to build another garage. It is like not spending 3000. to save a building that will value your house by 15,000.
to $20,000. more and make it easier to sale.
That doesn’t make good economic sense to me.
Maybe all it will take is a repair job. Call for a free estimate.

You need shingles on top of your tar paper if your boards are fine.
Garage’s matter. Anything worth owning is worth taking care of.
